Cipro, a.k.a. ciprofloxacin, is used to treat a variety of severe bacterial infections, most commonly urinary tract infections. It works by stopping the production of proteins bacteria needs to feed on. Cipro must only be used on ailments known to be caused by bacteria and should not be a first resort.

Cipro comes in a tablet and a liquid (known as oral suspension) that are to be taken together. The tablet comes in three dosage amounts: 250 mg, 500 mg, and 750 mg. The liquid may be a 5 or 10 percent solution (per 100 mL) and comes in a strawberry flavor.

Take the exact dose prescribed, no more or less, and measure exactly. Shake the liquid for at least 15 seconds, and do not chew or break the tablet.

Take Cipro with a large glass of water, and get plenty of fluids throughout the day. Do not take any dairy products or calcium-fortified beverages alone with Cipro; do not take caffeine with Cipro. Avoid antacids, vitamins, or any drug that contains sucralfate or didanosene from 6 hours before to two hours after your dose of Cipro; these products can make the treatment less effective. Take Cipro at the same time each day.

Common side effects include nausea, dizziness, blurred vision, insomnia, anxiety, and increased sensitivity to light. Stop taking Cipro and get medical assistance quickly if you experience hives, difficulty breathing, fainting, heart palpitations, facial swelling, easy bruising or bleeding, fever, any rash, sudden joint pain, bloody or watery stool, discolored urine, less frequent urination, or skin discoloration.

Discuss all existing medical conditions with your doctor before taking Cipro. Do not take it if you are allergic to ciprofloxacin or other antibiotics; do not take Cipro if you are already taking Zanaflex or any drug that contains tiznidine.
